MEYERS CASE DISMISSEDBy KAREN ABRAMSThe legal case against Democratic activist Joel Meyers was dismissed in Manhattan Criminal Court April 4, according to the District Attorney's office. There was insufficient evidence to pursue the case, says Meyers' lawyer. Meyers was arrested last November, accused of the Class A misdemeanor of aggravated harassment. Tim James and Liz Shollenberger accused Meyers of making harassing phone calls to their home, and of threatening to bomb a public meeting of their political club, the Village Reform Democratic Club (VRDC). They gave the police tapes from their answering machine, which they said contained Meyer's threat. A homeless and squatter's activist in the East Village, Meyers spent two days in jail following the arrest. Meyers, a member of VRDC's opposition club, the Village Independent Democrats, said the accusations by James and Shollenberger were politically motivated, a charge James said was "ridiculous." Bruce Feffer, Meyer's attorney in the case, said the charges against his client were dropped after the DA's office conducted a voice analysis of Meyers, but were unable to determine whether his was actually the voice on the answering machine tapes provided by James and Shollenberger. "They couldn't prove the charges," Feffer said. THE VILLAGER | |||
