Spring 2001       Vol. III No. 1

WELCOME!

Welcome to another edition of AThe Letter of the Law@, a periodic newsletter for friends and clients of Bruce Feffer, Attorney At Law .

As this is the first newsletter of 2001, I want to congratulate all of my friends and clients on surviving the long, cold New York City winter. For those residing in warmer climates, I will admit to being a bit envious, but I still love New York.

As you will see in the paragraphs to follow, the past few months have kept me quite busy. As always, this newsletter is intended to keep you informed of some of my activities, as well as provide helpful information about the law. I hope you enjoy this edition of my newsletter - as you enjoy the lovely Spring weather that has now finally arrived.

-Bruce

MESSAGE BOARD

Court Victories

I am pleased to report that I was able to obtain a favorable verdict for my client, a stand-by travel service, in a lawsuit to collect damages from a travel agency that issued bogus airline tickets. The litigation spanned four years and culminated in a trial in New York County Supreme Court, but in the end my client prevailed. In another case, I successfully represented a woman from Switzerland who was cheated by a dishonest real estate broker. The woman gave the broker a deposit on an apartment, but before signing any papers, changed her mind. The broker refused to return the deposit and we sued. The judge not only ordered the broker to refund the deposit, but added costs and interest as well.

Noise Complaints

Tenants in New York City who have complaints about excessive noise can call the Department of Environmental Protection Noise Hotline 888-677-5433.

Transactions

Despite a general slow-down in the economy, the Manhattan real estate market is still relatively busy. I am currently working on new condominium developments from Tribeca to Harlem. I am also representing numerous buyers and sellers of co-op and condo apartments throughout the city.

TRIVIA Congratulations to those who knew the answer to the trivia question in the last newsletter (David Dinkins was the last NYC Mayor to graduate from Brooklyn Law School). NEW QUESTION: In what film did the legendary attorney William Kunstler portray a criminal court judge. E-mail your answers to Brufef@aol.com. The first three correct winners get a free one-hour legal consultation.

Need a Speaker?

As a member of the Law-Related Education Committee of the New York County Lawyers Association (Chaired by Justice Richard Lee Price, New York State Supreme Court), I often speak about law and the legal system to groups throughout the city. I am available to speak to your school, company or organization and would be happy to do so. Just call, write, or send an e-mail to me at the address or phone number listed on this newsletter.

FLEXIBLE FEES

Generally, law firms offer three different kinds of fee arrangements:

  1. Hourly Billing

  2. Flat Rate

  3. Contingency Fee (percentage of award or recovery, if any)

My flexible fee policy includes these traditional fee arrangements while allowing clients to work out alternative fee and payment plans wherever possible.
