TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY EDITION!

IT'S BEEN TWENTY YEARS

"Blessed is he who has found his work."

- Thomas Carlyle, Philosopher

This February marks the twentieth anniversary of my career in law. A career that I have, at various times, considered a mission, a chore, a means to an end, merely a job, " a nice living", and in more recent years - a blessing.

Anyone who lives or works in New York City knows that over twenty years you can meet an extraordinary number and variety of people. I have met thousands of people through my work as a lawyer and have built relationships - some fleeting, others lasting - with many of them. My clients have included artists and entrepreneurs; prisoners and politicians; clothing makers and noodle makers; real estate buyers, sellers, developers and managers; agents, brokers, and consultants; teachers, doctors, and even lawyers; employers, employees, and employment agencies; non-profit community organizations and global corporations; people in crisis and others who have "made it". The list goes on.

There is hardly a better compliment than when someone puts their trust in you, and hardly a better feeling when you are able to help.

I am grateful to the many clients who have found their way to my office. To judges and lawyers who have helped me with advice, referrals, legal work, or who have simply served as role models and mentors. To my smart and dedicated assistants who make it possible for me to stay at my desk and keep working, even on days when I want to close up shop. To friends, family, and most of all, God, without whom none of what I do has any real purpose or meaning.

Lest this sound like a retirement speech, let me hasten to say that, like many New Yorkers, I can be a bit greedy - twenty years just isn't enough! I'm hoping it's just the beginning and the best is yet to come. I just couldn't believe that it was already twenty years, and I could not let the occasion pass without sending out this note of thanks.

So.... Thanks.

New Real Estate Website

A new website is available that provides information on New York City housing and population trends. Prices, rents, vacancy rates, and neighborhood information such as crime rates, school attendance, and resident income are all a click away at www.nychanis.com.

LLC Publication Requirement

New York's law requiring newly formed LLC's (Limited Liability Companies) to publish a series of notices before they can qualify to bring any court actions has been upheld in court. The lawrequires such notices to be published within 120 days of the LLC's creation, however the failure to do so does not affect the validity of the LLC but only it's right to commence litigation.

Twentieth Anniversary Trivia Contest

Complete the following phrase from a famous rock n roll anthem. First correct answer received by e-mail wins a free legal consultation. Funniest incorrect answers will be featured in next newsletter (keep it clean).

Need a Speaker?

As a member of the Law-Related Education Committee of the New York County Lawyers Association (Chaired by Justice Richard Lee Price, New York State Supreme Court), I often speak about law and the legal system to groups throughout the city. I am available to speak to your school, company or organization and would be happy to do so. Just call, write, or send an e-mail to me at the address or phone number listed on this newsletter.

FLEXIBLE FEES

Generally, law firms offer three different kinds of fee arrangements:

  1. Hourly Billing
  2. Flat Rate
  3. Contingency Fee (percentage of award or recovery, if any)

My flexible fee policy includes these traditional fee arrangements while allowing clients to work out alternative fee and payment plans wherever possible.
